M 58 Barred Spiral Galaxy
Messier 58, also known as M58 or NGC 4579, is a barred spiral galaxy located in the constellation Virgo and is one of the brightest members of the Virgo Cluster of galaxies. Discovered by Charles Messier in 1779, it lies roughly 62 to 68 million light-years away and harbors an active nucleus, classified as a Seyfert/LINER galaxy, powered by a supermassive black hole with an estimated mass of about 70 million Suns.
Like its neighbor M90, M58 is considered an "anemic" galaxy, with a low content of neutral hydrogen gas thought to have been stripped away by the dense intergalactic medium of the Virgo Cluster, resulting in a reduced rate of star formation compared to similar spiral galaxies.
