The Riedel family migrated in 1873 as part of a group known as "Colonia Saxonia" from Saxony, Germany, to the "Thumb" of Michigan. (Anna's maternal grandmother, Anna Marie Schreiter, was also part of the Colonia Saxonia migration group.)

The oldest daughter in the Heinrich Adolph (Adolph) Riedel family died in Germany. The family arrived with four children, and a fifth was born in Michigan. Anna's grandfather Louis is standing on the right.
