Story: "Snippets of information about Augusta"

(By her great-granddaughter Anna)

  • Augusta, her husband, and four of her children (including my grandfather, Louis Hermann Riedel) were part of the "Colonia Saxonia," a group of immigrants that came to the United States in 1873.
  • My mother was named Nettie Augusta for a friend of her mother’s ("Nettie") and her paternal grandmother ("Marie Auguste"). It apparently pleased Augusta to be so honored, but my mother hated it. She said the kids at school used to taunt her with "Augusta wind, Augusta wind!"
  • Family and community lore says that Augusta donated land for the Lutheran church in Forestville, Michigan. It would have been unusual for a woman of her era to own land.
  • She outlived her husband by almost 20 years. It was the opposite with my mother’s maternal grandparents: Alvin outlived his wife, Louise, by many years. When my mother was little and hadn't grasped the distinction between the paternal and maternal sides of her family, she asked, “Why don’t Grandma and Grandpa live together?”
