Louis was the owner of a hotel, saloon, grain elevator, and lumber company; he was also a grain buyer and farm machinery salesman. He served in the village council, school board, and Red Cross. He was the town treasurer. During World War II he was chairman of a bond drive.
His daughter Nettie remembers him as the first family member to get up on cold winter mornings to tend to the furnace in the basement. He was a keen oberser of local weather patterns.
