Edward Moseley was born on 21 September 1882 in Auburn, Cayuga County, New York, a small but busy industrial city in upstate New York. Life there centered on family, church, school, and work, with many people employed in factories, local businesses, or nearby farms.

Most homes still relied on coal or wood heat, horse-drawn travel, and simple household routines, so daily life was harder and slower than it is today.

Biography

Edward Moseley was born on September 21, 1882, in Auburn, New York, to William Moseley, an English immigrant, and Catherine Burns, who was born in Ireland. His mother died when he was seven years old. Known for his short stature at about 5 feet 3 inches, he was nicknamed “Shorty” and remained cheerful and energetic throughout his life, retaining physical vitality into his later years.

He was an expert carpenter and built several pieces of furniture for the family. We still have a small table he made.

He served in the U.S. Navy from 1903 to 1907 during the period of the Philippine Insurrection following the Spanish-American War. Although he did not see combat, he served aboard a cruiser and three battleships and completed his service as a carpenter’s mate.
