Biography
Edward Moseley was born on September 21, 1882, in Auburn, New York, to William Moseley, an English immigrant, and Catherine Burns, who was born in Ireland. His mother died when he was seven years old. Known for his short stature at about 5 feet 3 inches, he was nicknamed “Shorty” and remained cheerful and energetic throughout his life, retaining physical vitality into his later years.
He was an expert carpenter and built several pieces of furniture for the family. We still have a small table he made.
He served in the U.S. Navy from 1903 to 1907 during the period of the Philippine Insurrection following the Spanish-American War. Although he did not see combat, he served aboard a cruiser and three battleships.
Here is a quote from the Auburn Citizen newspaper of July 11, 1907 about his return from military service:
Edward Mosley, son of William J. Mosley, has just returned from
four years' service in the United States navy. He has seen many things of
interest, as he has made a trip around the world. Most of his service was passed
in Chinese waters. He enlisted as a musician, but later took up the trade of
carpenter. He was honorably discharged as second class carpenter’s mate.
Grandpa married my grandmother Louise Rebmann in 1917. They lived in Tonawanda, NY, until the early 1950s.
Edward worked as a carpenter at Lake Erie Engineering Works in Buffalo, New York. He built the packing cases for hydraulic presses.
My grandparents moved to San Diego in the 50s and lived in a small house built onto the back of our house at 2046 Dayton Drive in Lemon Grove. There, Grandpa turned our yard into by far the most beautiful in the neighborhood. He loved plants and the Lemon Grove climate, and he even built us a green-house full of exotic plants.
