Peter George Johnson was born on 10 Sep 1867 in Batavia, New York. At that time, Batavia was a small but active county town in western New York, still shaped by the Civil War era and the rapid growth of the United States. Most people lived without electricity, indoor plumbing, cars, or telephones. Travel was mainly by horse, wagon, and railroad.
Life centered on family, church, farming, and small-town business. Batavia served the farms around it, so people would have known grain markets, livestock, local shops, blacksmiths, and mills. Schools existed, but daily life for many children still included work at home or on farms. News came through newspapers, letters, and word of mouth.
In 1867, the country was rebuilding after the Civil War. Immigration was rising, industry was expanding, and towns like Batavia connected rural life with the growing commercial world of upstate New York.

Biography
My great-grandfather, Peter George Johnson, was born September 10, 1867, in Oswego, New York. He had three sisters and one brother. His parents were Peter H. Johnson, born in Copenhagen, Denmark, and Augusta Siewertsen, born in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany.
In 1870, when Peter was 2, his family had moved to Tonawanda, New York. Peter then lived the entire rest of his life in Tonawanda.
In 1880, when he was 12, Peter was working in a shingle mill in Tonawanda, a dangerous place for a 12 year old! Tonawanda was a major lumber center at the time.
In 1892, Peter married my great-grandmother, Caroline (Lena) Dueger. They had three children, one of whom was my grandfather, Alfred Johnson.
Peter worked as a machinist, including one period at Spaulding Fibre. Peter died February 2, 1928, at DeGraff Memorial Hospital in North Tonawanda, New York.
