Highlights 2018

It’s always fun for me to look over what we’ve done over the past year in preparation for writing this highlights post — I’m always amazed at how many places we’ve gone and things we’ve done. We consider ourselves lucky that it’s all been possible!

I’d like to start with travel, which has been a life-long passion for both of us. We love experiencing new people and places, as well as revisiting favorites from the past.

We visited both Colorado and Minnesota twice this year. In March we did a Road Scholar service learning trip to the Four Corners area that involved Anasazi artifact preparation and curation. We have now done four similar trip to Cortez, Colorado, and all have been wonderful experiences.

We drove back to Boulder in May, where we rented a house and hosted the Livengoods (unfortunately the rest of the family wasn’t able to come) for about a week. We had great fun hiking, shopping, eating good food, and sightseeing. We also visited two universities with our college-age grandkids. It was also a pleasure seeing our former neighbor, Veronika, and visiting favorite places from our two years (2007-2009) living in Colorado.

The trips to Minnesota were in August (only Dick and I) and October (when Ellen joined us and Miranda put in a super-surprise appearance for a few days). The Blomquists have been hosting four foster kids since the late spring, so we stayed in a bed and breakfast (Bird House Inn) in the lake town of Excelsior.  What a charming little place, and so close to shopping, restaurants, and walking along Lake Minnetonka.

We also did a trip in February to Roots Tech, a genealogy conference in Salt Lake City. It was also a repeat experience for us, and we appreciated learning new tips on doing our family history, which continues to be a major hobby for both of us.

Other activities for us this year included our continued involvement at the Computer History Museum (cataloging and researching), a history course at Stanford (which Ellen also took — what a treat to join your daughter for a quality educational experience), and several 5K races.

Big Livengood news this year was the property they bought in Sonoma county, which they intend to build on in the years to come (the house that had stood there was burned in last year’s fires). Ellen and Rick are busy, as always, in their jobs (Netflix and Intel), and Matthew and Miranda are both in college (San Francisco State and West Valley College).

Gillian and Mike also have very active professional lives (law practice and photography), and the foster kids have been a challenging project! Archer and Helena are both doing very well in the 5th and 7th grades. Archer also plays soccer, and Helena has been taking piano for several years.

Tim now lives in Morgan Hill, just south of where we and the Livengoods are. He still drives for Uber and Lyft, and earlier this year he joined the Catholic Church.

We are looking forward to being with the local family for Thanksgiving, and we hope the Blomquists will make it out here over the Christmas holidays.
