In late June we spent a couple of days scouting out Yosemite in preparation for our family vacation there in early August.
The scenery was stunning, but the heat was awful (about 96 degrees one day, and that in a narrow valley lined with reflective granite walls — one of the rangers said the Half Dome climbers were courting heart attacks). The hikes were great, but the mosquitoes were bothersome. The lunches at the Ahwahnee were lovely, but it’s impossible to park anywhere (and the shuttle buses aren’t easy to deal with, either). In short, it was a travel adventure, and also worthwhile because now our expectations probably better match reality and we can plan more wisely for the next visit (like, maybe we should have brought insect repellant?!).
