In 1954, in a goodwill gesture to men in uniform far from home, my parents invited sailors from the US Navy to share our Thanksgiving dinner. The sailors, whose names were Paul and Ray, were stationed at the San Diego Naval Base.
After Thanksgiving, we saw them many other times. Once they took us on a tour of the aircraft carrier USS Boxer when it had an open house day in San Diego harbor. The Boxer had just returned from several tours of duty during the Korean War.
We had several visits from Ray after he married his wife Florence (Flo). I remember Flo also liked to visit with my grandmother, Louise Rebmann Moseley.
It turned into a warm friendship that started with a shared Thanksgiving dinner.
