Johnson-Moseley family updates

My French Connection: my French relatives

In my most recent post,  “We were never Moseleys“, I mentioned that I had discovered that my great-great-grandmother Emma Wilkins left England, where she was born, and moved to France, where she married a Frenchman, Auguste Bodet, in 1870. That led me to my next area of research: to see if I could find out what happened to Emma and her French children. I also wondered if I have any distant cousins in France today.

Emma Wilkins was the mother of William Moseley, my great-grandfather.

Here is a summary of what I have learned so far about Emma Wilkins Bodet.

Emma and Auguste were married July 4, 1870, in Vernantes, France, just North of Saumur, where Emma was living and working as a teacher. Auguste was working as a valet in the same region. Saumur is a town in the Maine-et-Loire area in Western France.

Emma and Auguste had three daughters, Marie Irma, Marguerite Jeanne, and Augustine Marguerite Marie.

We were never Moseleys: who was my Moseley great-grandmother?

Early this year I was contacted by Noreen, a second cousin, about the Moseley family history.  Noreen had recently found Moseley family records that her grandmother Dorothy had accumulated years earlier.

The records prove that the mother of my great-grandfather William Moseley was Emma Wilkins and that William was born out of wedlock. He was apparently “adopted” into the Moseley family by his grandmother Mary Glover Moseley and her second husband, Henry Hawkins Moseley.

Where the Burns came from in Ireland: where are the Irish roots?

In December I was contacted by a distant cousin Sarah who happened to have found a record of the birth of my great-grandmother Catherine Burns in Ireland. She was born in 1865 in Castledermot, County Kildare, Ireland.
