When she was attending the University of Michigan in the 1920s, Nan (the namesake of this site) spent two summers at the University of Michigan Biological Station. She was a biology major at the time. At the station, students did research projects about wildlife and wrote up their results in research papers.
Now fast forward to today. The Zooniverse web site sponsors many citizen science projects that can be done online. Most of these projects involve annotating or categorizing data. One of their recent projects is called “Unearthing Michigan Ecological Data.” For this project, I am looking at pages from the student research reports and recording what kind of data (if any) is on the page. Possibilities include maps, graphs, and lists of species.
Here is an example of one of the pages. This one is a map.
I am donating my time on this project in memory of Nan.
