On this Veterans Day 2015 I’m thinking of all the men in the family who served in major wars, including some in World War I and II.
Above is a military portrait of my brother, Bill Van Raaphorst, who served in Europe in the U.S. Corps of Engineers from 1943 to 1945. He was aboard a mine sweeper working in various ports in the UK.
A number of my first cousins also served in World War II, and two of my uncles, Art Bostwick and Ray Riedel, were in France during World War I.
I’m grateful for the sacrifices they made to help end the wars and restore the peace.
