Colorado to California 2018

This is the last in a series of five posts about our trip to Colorado in May and June 2018.

How different a road trip (or maybe any trip) is on the way back versus on the way out! We took eight days to get to Colorado, and we made it back in three. The weather was hot, the car seats uncomfortable, and the scenery not very scenic.

After the Livengoods left for the airport, we finished our packing, looked the place over for possible misplaced items, and exited within an hour.

We headed west on highway 70, and our first stop overnight was Grand Junction. We had planned to take a look at Canyon National Monument on the way by the next morning, but the threat of rain deterred us, and we drove on without stopping.

The San Rafael Reef was dramatically beautiful (see the featured image above), and the restaurant where we had lunch dessert (doesn’t everybody have dessert after lunch?!) provided us some mild amusement.

We stayed overnight in Las Vegas and pondered how much it looks like Los Angeles and our Bay Area. Sprawl and crawl: it took us over an hour to go around the city! In the years to come, where will they get the water to run a city of that size?

In the Mohave Desert we saw an interesting solar panel and collector farm, and the wind farm near Tehachapi was dramatic, with windmills of all sizes turning at different speeds.

Of course we stopped for a “bratt” sandwich with mustard and sauerkraut at Kohnen’s Country Bakery in Tehachapi. And of course we couldn’t pass up some of their homemade cookies for dessert. We live large! One of our last amusements was Alien Fresh Jerky in Baker, California — what a crazy place!
