Field trip to Napa County

On February 19, 2021, we drove east to look around Napa County. In our part of California there are four north-south corridors; starting on the west side of the state where the land meets the Pacific Ocean:

  • Highway 1 and the beaches and bays
  • Highway 101, which carries most of the traffic (we live just to the east of 101 – see “Sunrise Park” on the map below)
  • Highway 12, which goes through the Valley of the Moon, and is near Ellen and Rick’s lot in Glen Ellen
  • Highways 29 and 128, which go through Napa Valley

Except for the coast, all of these area have many wineries and vineyards, and Sonoma County also has cows to support our active dairies.

Since we moved up here in September from Silicon Valley, we’ve been trying to get better acquainted with our new region. This week it was Napa Valley, and it we were treated to lovely, after-the-rain weather and dramatic, cumulus clouds.

We drove up and down the valley, and then had lunch at a little bakery in Calistoga.

It was sad to see last year’s fire damage up close, but were impressed at how well our firefighters did at saving what they could.

Calistoga is a nice, friendly town with picturesque houses and churches, a park, and a REAL bookstore! We’ll be going back soon to do some hiking at Bothe-Napa Valley State Park.
