Early in December I returned for the third time to work as a volunteer helping to maintain the Battleship Missouri in Pearl Harbor. I was on a Road Scholar trip with 20 other volunteers from all over the United States. This time my work assignments included washing the walls of the Mess Hall to prepare it for repainting and refinishing the flag poles that are displayed in front of the ship.
In the middle of the week I spent a night on the ship at an encampment and then attended the December 7th memorial ceremony the following day. I always find the ceremony moving. I also saw the December 7th Memorial Parade in Waikiki that evening.
