After lots of investigation and scouting trips to look around, we finally got it together to move to Colorado this year. We’ve been thinking of doing it for a long time (since Anna commuted to Boulder for a year in the 90s). So we now live in Lyons, Colorado, about 15 miles north of Boulder.
During this entire year we have been working together as DITA (Darwin Information Typing Architecture) technical writing consultants for many different companies. We did a variety of projects for our clients, including technical writing, onsite training, and we even conducted a technical writing seminar remotely for a client with people located in both London and Florida.
We were busy with our move in August-October. We bought a new condo in a co-housing community in Lyons, which is a small town of about 1700 people, is located in a scenic area about 25 miles from Rocky Mountain National Park. We like the co-housing because we now belong to a community with lots of neighbors we talk to and work with all the time.
When we left California in September we took our time driving to Colorado. We drove along Highway 50 and stopped off in Great Basin National Park, Arches National Park (near Moab, UT), and Ouray, Colorado.
In March of this year we both finished a half marathon run in San Ramon, California. The run was on a cool, cloudy day, and we finished together in just under three hours. We might not do it again, since it really was tough on our bodies, but it was quite an experience!
In June Anna and I went to Chico for a week where Anna finished up her technical localization (translation) certificate program.
In April we went to the wedding of Jill’s friend Dawn in Solvang in Southern California. Before the wedding we stopped in Rancho Mirage and San Diego to see the van Raaphorsts. The Blomquists and Livengoods were also at the wedding, and we all had a nice time together.
In November we drove from Colorado to Minnesota to help out at the Blomquists’ house while our latest grandchild, Helena, was born on November 1. Helena Allison Anna Margaret Blomquist weighed 7 pounds and was 19.5 inches tall. She is easy-going and eats and sleeps nicely. She has very graceful hands! Her brother, our grandson Archer, is almost two, really likes trucks and being outdoors. He is bright and clever and has lots of energy!
Later in November we were back in the Bay Area attending a memorial service for our cousin Andi’s husband, Richard Jobe. We took the opportunity while there to visit the Livengoods and our son, Tim, who lives in Sunnyvale and is doing software contracting for a company in Fremont.
Our son-in-law Rick Livengood is still at Intel, and Ellen is still at IBM. Matthew is now 11 and in the 6th grade. Miranda is 8 and in the 3rd grade. Both Matthew and Miranda were on soccer teams this past year, and we were able to attend quite a few of their games and cheer them on.
We expect the Livengoods and Blomquists to visit us over the Christmas holidays. Both we and our community have guest rooms, so if you are motivated to visit the area, please come and see us!
